The Chance of Living (2017 - present)
The Chance of Living is a visual chronicle that captures the enduring connection between modern-day policing and its origins in slave patrols, with a focus on Jackson Avenue (now MLK Drive) in Bergen-Lafayette, Jersey City, NJ. This project juxtaposes historical resilience against contemporary challenges, exposing the stark realities of gentrification and systemic oppression. Through compelling portraits and urban landscapes, it questions the true meaning of safety and highlights the exploitation of crime narratives to justify increased police presence. By documenting these nuanced power dynamics, the project aims to preserve the Black community, challenge the societal impacts of policing, and amplify the voices of those most affected. This work seeks to inspire critical reflection and action towards a more just and inclusive future for all communities.
